My wife and I separated last early last year, do we file separate income tax returns?

Early last year my wife and I separated. She moved out shortly after. I want to know if we are to file separate income tax returns? If we do, do we have to enter our income on the other’s tax return? Or, do we still have to file jointly until our divorce is finalized?

You each file your own tax return. Make sure that you check off separated on the front. Make sure you include a note with your date of separation in it. If either of you are making a claim using the other spouse as a dependant for the time that you were still living together, you will then need the other spouses income in order to pro-rate it for the deduction. Make sure that you both check off separated on the return. If you have children, decide who is claiming them before you file. Both of you can’t. Depending on what province you live in, make sure you decide who is claiming the property taxes on the communal home. You both can’t claim that either.
    Take care!
